The restorers entrusted the new lighting to the skills of Nord Light , who tackled a complicated design mission: enhance the renewed beauty of Giotto s masterpiece, encourage the believer s discovery of Christ s face from the bottom to the top, use harmless products for the work. Nord Light achieved all the requested goals by setting up two 4-m. lighting towers on the sides of the chapel that hosts to the work, equipped with 10 horizontally and vertically adjustable LED spotlights, directing the light only towards the Cross and only to limited parts of the Crucifix: not a flat light, but rather a light enhancing the contrasts produced by the raised and bas-relief parts. The spotlights, in fact, come from different directions and enhance the raised parts, such as the aureola, the facets of the wooden panel, and the decorations, as well as the punching. An additional lighting appliance with 4 LED spotlights was placed at the foot of the Crucifix to direct light from the bottom to the top following the believer s eyes. Nord Light used LED with a high CRI colour yield, both hot white at 3000?K, to enhance gold, and neutral white at 4000?K to enhance the blue of lapislazuli, the second main colour in the Crucifix. The LED spotlights ensure a good visual impact and cause no damage to the work thanks to the absence of UV-rays or heat.
